Summer Wrap Up: Junction City Scandinavian Festival, Scandinavian Princess Daybed

Life has been busy again--mostly for my beloved Farmer Boy.
My smashed car window is now repaired,
a pine tree has been felled (by a professional this time),
the roof is half done (with a temporary ridge cap between the new and old roofing),
the air conditioner has been taken down and stored,
the autumn leaves are wonderful,
the grapes have been ripe for several weeks now
AND I still haven't seen any snakes:)

Oh--and my ever busy hubby is now working on another project.
Such a talented man with MUCH more energy then his wife.

OK, that brings you up-to-date mostly in what has/is going on in our lives.
Now on to summer photos of the Scandinavian Festival.

Years ago we happened on to this festival totally by coincidence.
 One of several Scandinavian festivals in the Pacific NW,
this one is held in downtown Junction City in the Willamette Valley
(Other festivals/celebrations take place in Astoria, Portland, Ballard and Poulsbo. Scandinavians were one of the immigrant groups to the PNW and we even have our very own fjord--the Hood Canal in western Washington)

We love the folk dancing!
The kids are a lot of fun to watch.
(This is a very kid friendly, family event with lots to see and do)

Yours truly loves the aebleskivers--Danish pancake balls.
They are beyond yummy--as the Small One found out.
I especially like them with lingonberry preserves but plain with a bit of powdered sugar is good too.
YUM!
(These are actually fairly simple to make with some practice and an aebleskiver pan)

I also love lefse, meatballs and...

the not so traditional, but totally yummy cotton candy.
Mmm. It was sugar-licious and
so BIG that it took all three of us to finish it off.

We stopped by to see the blacksmith at work...
they also have other crafters.

Small One encountered some Vikings--
fortunately they were very friendly Vikings and even let her hold one of their swords.
Sadly we did miss getting a photo of the wonderful trolls wandering about.

I suppose I should let you know the "decorative" cast on her right arm was the result of getting thrown off a horse at "summer camp". Fortunately she still LOVES horses.
YEA!

I enjoy the different hairstyles the gals wear.
Braids are so lovely.

Love the rosemaling on different buildings also.
I almost always buy something to add to my collection...

But, in keeping with my decluttering goal,
this lovely Scandinavian floral crown was all I bought and
it wasn't for me:)

Well, it's WAY past time for bed and I am about ready to fall asleep typing so...
Blessings all!
Aimee

Oh yea.
I forgot to show you our little bit of Scandinavia...
the Nordic Princess Daybed Farmer Boy made his little princess MUCH earlier this year.

Here's a photo of the finished project.

Big enough for an adult
(I know because I slept on it for several nights when I was trying to avoid a moth),
yet cozy and very cool for a child.

I do have a question for all you talented crafters out there though.
We have considered painting some of the Swedish folk designs that you see on the rug on the drawer fronts and possibly painting certain parts of the trim red. Good idea, bad idea?
We're also OK with leaving it as it is in case we want to change the color scheme in the room later.
I have other pillows for the bed too but they aren't in this photo.

Any suggestions oh gifted ones?

Scandinavian Princess Bed:
We got some inspiration from Ana White's great website
More from doing a search for photos of Norwegian beds with rosemaling.
And, I liked the drawers on an Ikea daybed and another daybed...
but hubby ended up designing the bed because none of these,
however wonderful, had all the elements we wanted to incorporate in the bed.

Oh--did I say a certain Disney movie played a role in all this to? And a certain Princess?
LOL.

If anyone is interested in how we put together the bed, let me know and I can post photos of the process. It was a LOT of fun and we're really happy we chose to make one instead of trying to buy something.

Ok--bedtime.

That festival looks like a good one to attend. Dear's mother is/was Swedish so he's a 50% Swede :)
Dear also is the one in our family who makes Abelskivers and Swedish pancakes.
That Princess bed is really dreamy. Love it. I'm not crafty so I don't have good advice but I do like that pillow on the bed! Are there stencils you could stick on to see if you'd like a design on the bed?
So glad you haven't seen snakes...they creep me out! We bloggers always get excited about improved Internet service for sure.
Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

I love the bed! I totally think it would add a lot of character and fun to do some rosemaling on the bed. I've done such things on baby cribs and little girl stools. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

@Victor~
Thank you! Your comment, mentioning two of my favs, has me hungry again--especially for the aebleskivers:)
God bless you and yours as well!
BLessings,
Aimee

@Ellen~
It is one that our family truly enjoys! You are SO lucky to have your hubby making you Swedish pancakes (another fav of mine) and aebleskivers! Yummy! Thank you! I think my hubby did a great job of making my dream a reality:) Isn't that pillow awesome? Also an Ikea product (akerkulla I think)--I like it very much too and now wish I had picked up the curtain panels in that same line. Oh well--another excuse to make the trek to Ikea. I like your stencil idea. I did check on that before and found them in a rosemaling pattern, but haven't seen them in the Swedish folk art. However, I think I read something about creating your own stencil and that is something I might pursue (I being sweetly asking my hubby to help me design one). Thanks for your advice!
Ah yes--creepy snakes. Sometimes I think Ireland would make a good home. LOL
Blessings and a wonderful weekend to you as well!
Aimee

@Teresa~
Isn't it great? Love it:) I am a spoiled woman and so is one little gal. I agree--I think it would add to the Nordic look if we added some more detail to the bed. Just don't want to overdue it...maybe we could try one area at a time then reevaluate. Thank you for your advice as well:)
Blessings,
Aimee

How did I miss this! I love your festival posts and am so glad you got to go this year and share some of your experience with us. I like the bed and think some rosemaling would be charming, although it is lovely as is. I'm glad your grand still likes horses [and crowns and cotton candy] after her mishap and hope she heals rapidly. xx

Oh my you were practically in our back yard .... We used to go to that Festival way back when our kids were young. It really is a great family event and cool that this small town has managed to keep the wonderful tradition going forever! I love the bed!

@Gracie~
LOL--no worrries! I am glad you enjoy my posts about all the festivals I go too:) Thanks for your advice about the bed. When I told hubby I had written about the bed and what Teresa had said, he said something to the effect that he had always intended to add rosemaling--so rosemaling (or Swedish folk art) it shall be:) Small One arm is completely healed now and the cast off--Yea!
Blessings,
Aimee

@Sallie~
We were very close to where you guys are! I agree--great fun for families.
Thank you -- we really like the bed too...and so does Small One:)
Blessings,
Aimee

What a fun outing. A Scandinavian festival sounds both interesting and entertaining. The aebleskivers are something I've read about but never tried. I do enjoy seeing the costumes and hairstyles. The bed your husband made for Small One is so very charming!

@Lorrie~
I hope you get a chance to try aebleskivers one of these days Lorrie. They are delicious especially with lingonberries. I will let my hubby know your kind comment on the bed he made for Small One. It will be nice when we get the rosemaling or Swedish folk art done on it--but first, a whole lot of other house projects:)
Blessings,
Aimee

Hi Aimee, I just found your blog through a visit to Teresa Kasner's blog. When I saw Junction City I had to visit. Our daughter just accepted a job offer at the hospital in Medford back in August. We haven't visited yet and probably won't now until spring, but I want to get a feel for the area. Your blog is lovely and I have just become your newest follower. For some reason it wouldn't apply my profile photo to your followers list . . . so I'm that little blue shadow on the end, LOL. We live in Central Washington and it is always fun to meet another blogging sister from our corner of the world. Do come visit my blog, my welcome mat is always out.
Your new blogging sister,
Connie :)
P.S.Now we'll see if it prints the photo with my comment . . . I don't understand way this happens sometimes, but then I'm not a techy)

@Connie~
Welcome! I am so glad you enjoyed my post from the Scandinavian Fest in Junction City.
I actually know the Rogue River Valley/Medford/southern Oregon area quite well as we would often visit there when I was young! LOTS of beautiful areas down there and spring is a great time to visit. I am sure by the time you visit your daughter, she will have a list of places to see, but here are some of my favs: Jacksonville (old western town near Medford), Crater Lake (National Park, a must visit, lovely drive up there), Ashland Shakespeare Fest (if you like plays), Lithia Park (got to try the water--LOL and it's a pretty place)...and, if you like hiking uphill....table rock. There are two--upper and lower). I have a couple posts from the area from quite a few years ago. Lots of nice stuff between you and there to see too:)
LOL. Don't worry about the tech stuff. Happens to everyone:)
Blessings,
Aimee
